We take pride as the Maine Green Independent Party is the oldest state Green party in the United States. It was founded in January of 1984 in Augusta, Maine, six months before the establishment of the National Green Party. The Maine Green Independent Party achieved ballot status on December 21, 1998, after having received 6.6% of the vote in the 1998 gubernatorial election. Today Maine has the highest percentage of registered Greens in the US.
John Rensenbrink,Co-Founder of the Maine Green Party recalls those first Green Days "18 people came to a small church on King Street in Augusta the second Saturday in January, 1984. It was later discovered that this was the first organizing meeting of the Green Party in the United States. It antedated the first national meeting of Greens in St. Paul, Minnesota by 8 months."
